Future Needs

Avalanche will have a number of needs in the future. Suggested strategies for fulfiling these needs are on this page.

Requests and Proposals by Topic

Printing

Typically to advertise events Avalanche and Hall Council use signs. Between newsletters, calendars, agendas, and advertisement signs we put up a lot of material weekly. This year we've had the good fortune of having a Network Technician to print free color pages of whatever was needed, but future generations may not be so lucky.

The other options for printing are both inadequate. If residents try to print through the RD it takes a while to have copies made, and color copies are either impossible, take a long time (trips to Clark), or aren't as nice as the lab prints. This option tends to take a long time - and most of the time printouts need to be prepared about a day before they go up - nobody is able to plan weeks ahead for advertising, typically. Option two is to go to Campus Printing Services. While they stick to the two day printing and delivery time they do cost money, which is something SHC and Avalanche often have trouble with.

The proposed solution is as follows. Enable a temporary I-card much like one of the ones leased at the front desk to have free printing - it would be tied to a hall council only account. This card would have no other abilities besides printing. Have a sign out sheet in the hall council office, and keep the card locked there. When someone wishes to use it, they can go sign the card out (stating name, date, time, netID, and purpose). The person could then login in whichever set of housing labs they like, and go to print what they needed. Housing keeps track of all logins by NetID, as well as records of printing by netID (from which computer as well). This means anyone who abuses the free printing card can be tracked down if violations ever occur. It allows for accountability of privileges, yet a fast response free printing system and less administrative red tape (involving people or services that are not always dependable or available). If you have questions, you can ask Jeff Ginger or Rick Ruppel about how this can work.

Hall Council Office Access

We've had a few keys in circulation this year - it would be nice if the major SHC and Avalanche officials could get keys to the SHC office so meetings could be held there, supplies might be stored, etc... Fortunately this year the president and vice president (who is also the Avalanche lead) have keys - but next year the Avalanche Lead would need a key and might not be a VP.

We would suggest that the president, vice president, treasurer, publicity head, and Avalanche lead all get keys to the Hall Council Office. This would be three more keys than are loaned out this year, not a huge security risk. The treasurer typically is highly involved in Hall Council and will often help go on shopping trips or put supplies into the room. The publicity head often times needs supplies like markers or paper or sticky tack to make advertisements, as well as access to the computer to print or design material if needed. This year we've had designers with very capable computers and programs - but this may not always be the case. Lastly, the Avalanche lead could run Avalanche exec meetings in the office and store supplies for events there.

Contact Lists

We've found that often times this year in order to find out who we need to talk to for planning events must run through our RD. If possible we would like listings of who we might speak to that represents various sections of housing. This list would include, but not be limited to, local area RD's, helpful area office people, Dining service officials, Herb, and more.

  • We would like contact information for whoever it is that rents us equipment so that we can rent and reserve equipment like an RD would do, but cutting out the middle-person.
  • It would be nice to have a list of potential chaperones that can act as drivers for large scale events. This listing would not be limited to just RD's - it could include other officials like, say, Rick Ruppel. Information about how and where to rent transportation would be great.
  • If possible we could like a contact with the advisor to CFRB funding to resolve questions and be able to present items such as budget proposals and revisions to requests - or even just guidance about how to best make requests to CFRB.

Web Site

An easily accessible web site - either via FTP or direct editing on the housing servers - would be helpful in bringing the Snyder community to the web. http://Snyder.YI.org is an example - a short URL that's easy to memorize would be essential. This way a web designer - possible a new Exec position - could keep up information about everything Snyder online.

Available Equipment

A listing of available equipment from Clark and other housing strongholds would be great. This would include projectors, stages, speaker systems, karaoke equipment, lighting, etc...

Formal Elimination of Voucher Requests

Instead of having the middle step of having a voucher request forms we'd like posted office hours that SHC and Avalanche members can talk to the RD and simple request a voucher. This is essentially how Ryan has been running it this year, we just wanted to finalize the policy - Ryan has done a superb job of being flexible and quick to get us vouchers.

Permanent Bulletin Board

We've been granted an advertising board this year just recently - which is great - it would be nice to have one that's easily accessible for SHC and Avalanche use!

Movie Permissions

If there's a way to get extended access to copyright use for movies to help combat the new lock down, we would much appreciate it.

RA Advisor

If an official RA Advisor could be appointed to help participate in and oversee Avalanche events (not lead, but provide security and assistance) I think we'd be in great shape. This year we've been fortunate enough to have support from a few RA's - next year Dave will probably help out too, but it would be good to have an official position.
