Emergency Procedures

This section explains what to do in emergencies - both medical and natural disaster related. Though short, this is some of the most important material.

Training modules are easy to navigate. Page subjects are listed in the blue sky navigation box in the upper right of the module. You may go back and fourth between pages as you wish. There are also next and previous navigation links at the bottom of every page. Once you have completed the last page of each module you can find a link to a quiz about that module at the bottom of the page. Make sure to have your login ID and password ready to login to the server. If you are unsure of your login or password contact Katherine.

I. BECKWITH POLICY AND PROCEDURES

The Beckwith handbook and additional policies are located in the Floater/Night Clerk log book, please familiarize yourself with the policies and procedures. All Personal Assistants will be expected to adhere to these policies. The Floaters and Night Clerks will also be expected to notify the R.A. on-duty and/or the Director/Associate Director of any policy violations.

II. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

A. MEDICAL EMERGENCIES

In the event of a medical emergency students are to contact 9- 911 and arrange for immediate medical assistance. McKinley Health Center also serves as a support for University of Illinois students. McKinley Health Center provides 24-hour nurse coverage, available by calling Dial-a-Nurse at 333-2700. McKinley also offers a direct line service to students with disability related illnesses this can be accessed at 4-4740.

Further information regarding McKinley Health Services, setting appointments, Dial-a Nurse, outside referrals, and Student Insurance can be obtained through "Your Guide to Health Services" which is available at McKinley Health Services.

Personal Assistants are required to submit an accident/ injury report for all medical emergencies, accidents, and injuries (including skin breakdowns/pressure sores, injuries to the PAs; See Accident/Injury Form). Copies of the necessary forms are available through the Beckwith Hall Directors office.

B. FIRE AND FIRE DRILLS

Beckwith has adopted a “DEFEND IN PLACE” response to a triggered fire alarm. This is an acceptable response by the National Fire Protection Association to protect the residents of Beckwith Hall for whom it is impractical to promptly evacuate in an emergency.

DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS DURING A FIRE OR A FIRE DRILL. Fire drills, false alarms, and genuine fire alarms are indistinguishable. Even in a "fireproof" building, a small wastebasket fire quickly fills an area with smoke and deadly gases. Smoke is the major cause of death in residence hall fires. For this reason, residents must be certain to close their room door and windows when they evacuate, to retard smoke. Hallway and stairwell smoke doors must be kept closed at all times. Do not re-enter the building until an ALL CLEAR signal is given. A fire drill will be conducted early each semester.

Beckwith residents with disabilities who are in their chairs, and able to move should exit the building as quickly as possible. Evacuating residents should group in the parking lot by the “no parking” sign.

C. TORNADO WATCH -- TORNADO WARNING

March through October is "tornado season" in Illinois. The following
terms are used by media and emergency agencies when referring to tornadoes:

  1. Tornado Watch: Weather conditions are ripe to produce these storms. Residents should be alert to changing weather conditions and be prepared to seek shelter should a "Tornado Warning" be announced.
  2. Tornado Warning: A tornado has been sighted in the area. Residents will be notified by a continuous blast from the Outdoor Warning System located atop several campus building, or by radio/TV news bulletins.

Upon receiving such notice residents must:

  1. Close the windows to avoid water damage
  2. Close the drapes to inhibit flying glass.
  3. Take a pillow, blanket, or coat to protect their head from flying glass.
  4. Leave their room and close their door.
  5. Follow specific instructions of Evacuation Plan.
  6. Listen to a portable radio for weather bulletins.
  7. Refrain from using the telephone or entering the rooms during the danger period.
  8. Residents in the designated secure area will be notified by a staff member that the danger has passed.

There will be emergency familiarization programs during the academic year.
