Personal Assistant Overview

POSITION:

The Beckwith Residence Hall Personal Assistant position can be divided into three categories: meal assistants, floaters/night clerks, and/or personal aides. Individuals are encouraged to work in any or all of these three categories.

Hours for each position are as follows:

  • Floater/Night Clerk: 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m.
  • Meal Assistants: 7:30 a.m.-9:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., 5:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. (Monday - Friday) and 10:30 a.m.-12:30p.m. (Sat. and Sun. Brunch.)
  • Personal Aide: Times are dependent on individual student needs.

All positions are for a maximum of nine month positions with duties beginning Fall semester and continuing through Spring semester, with competitive salary. Based on University of Illinois regulations in regards to employment UIUC Student Employees may work a maximum of 30 hours per week. All Extra-Help employees may work a maximum of 900 hours per academic year.

QUALIFICATIONS:

After receiving training, personal assistants must be able to work independently and must be dependable, reliable and responsible. Lifting and/or assisting in the performance of transfers of residents who need this assistance is an essential function of this position. Some experience with providing assistance to people with disabilities and/or previous experience in health care services is preferred.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist and administer to the needs of the student residents with physical disabilities particularly with regard to Activities of Daily living. Activities of Daily living include, but are not limited to, bathing, showering, shaving, hair-shampooing, grooming, feeding, brushing teeth, clipping nails, dressing, applying external or condom catheters for the purpose of draining from the bladder. May also be expected to perform bowel programs for the residents to aid in elimination. Each resident has an individual personal assistant care program but will teach his/her personal assistant the specific techniques required in addition to the basic training program.
  2. Implement the ADL principles and techniques as outlined in the training provided by a trained medical professional hired by DRES and the individual student residents.
  3. Keep all medical information about the residents with disabilities confidential unless the condition constitutes a risk to life and safety, in which case medical conditions are to be reported to Beckwith management and/or appropriate medical professionals.
  4. Practice safety techniques and principles in all matters related to the care and daily living of the residents with disabilities.
  5. Establish and maintain schedules with individual residents and staff. Keep the Beckwith management team and the residents with disabilities informed of all scheduling changes.
  6. Record all hours worked, assure that the proper verification signature is on the timesheets, and assure that timesheets are received by the Management team at the appropriate times.
  7. Floaters and Night Clerks must keep a log of activities. The log will be used as a means of communication between floaters on different shifts and the Beckwith management team.
  8. Personal assistants must secure replacements in the event that they are unable to cover a scheduled shift. The Beckwith Management Team must be informed of any change in scheduled service.
  9. Other duties as assigned.
