Beckwith Hall

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

The Beckwith Plan

Beckwith Hall is dedicated to facilitating the transitional residential needs of students with severe physical disabilities. Accordingly, residents receive assistance with their activities of daily living to accommodate their participation in the academic and extracurricular programs and activities of the UIUC. Students are also given opportunity to participate in educational programming, which is provided to promote their attainment of maximal functional independence.

Although Beckwith is open to all University of Illinois students, priority goes to students with disabilities who are presently unable to reside in other residence halls or private housing because they require personal assistants (PA), and to students hired to provide personal assistant services for Beckwith residents.

The residential, educational and transitional objectives of Beckwith Residence Hall are:

  1. To accommodate the residential needs of students with physical disabilities who require the services of personal assistants to successfully perform ADL.
  2. To promote maximal functional independence through educational programming, facilitate their transition to mainstream community housing, and to assist in the independent management of their disabilities.

While residing at Beckwith, residents are expected to work with the Beckwith management staff to advance their potential for functional independence. The ultimate goal is for Beckwith residents to become functionally capable of independent living or to acquire the managerial knowledge and skills necessary to successfully amass and coordinate the resources required to live as independently as possible. Beckwith residents agree to collaborate in the development of a Disability Management Plan with the Beckwith Management staff and to pursue the recommended action.
