Mission Statement
Feminism is often defined in many ways - our understanding is as follows:
fem·i·nism
- Belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.
- The movement organized around this belief.
Our purpose as the University of Illinois chapter of the Feminist Majority is multi-tiered. First and foremost, we make our best efforts to inform the student population about the issues related to women's rights and equality in society. As important as the first step of understanding and comprehending these issues is enabling the student population to act in accordance with them. This could vary from say, volunteering at the women's shelter to helping support, plan, and execute the annual sexual health fair, Sex Out Loud. When all of the smoke clears our final objective, however, is to make a positive difference in the lives of others - helping to form a world of equality among men and women.
It's important to note that the feminist majority is not politically bias, but instead does its best to inform members and students about the impacts on women's rights that are caused as a result of politics. We do not officially take a stand in affiliation with any political party and really do encourage people of many perspectives to attend and put in their input and views on women's rights.
Our group is open to membership of nearly anyone - you don't have to be female to join. We do our best to remain open to people of all ages, majors, socio-economic backgrounds, political perspectives, gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity and more. We ask that you come with an open mind and an eye towards establishing equality.
Over the next year we hope to enable the Feminist Majority to be better recognized throughout campus and spread the word about our mission. We hope to accomplish this through active programming efforts and remarkable events that can really engage the student population.
Networking
The Feminist Majority is now the umbrella organization for Campus For Choice - we help to work with members of CFC with our common goals. We do our best to support NOW, Men Against Sexual Violence, Pride, and more.
