Despite the feedback of fellow artists, I really do like the flow the gradients achieve here. The links appear almost as if they are lit from below and set back on a ledge, while the content boxes push your eyes to the center - where they contain pictures. I felt the drop shadows also help add a feeling of depth that both matches the gradients and seizes attention.
