The left column is dedicated to news items, but more exciting ones that visitors can engage with, not really general or random updates to the site. The center column has particularly interesting interactive features while the right side is dedicated to material that is better for those who'd like to read or explore. As per my usual feature-driven layout each area is designed to quickly betray its function with simple pictures and explanations.

Besides that the whole page looks colorful and fun! You can't help but dive in!
