I more recently added Snap-Shots pop-ups to the items on the page, which allows users to get a glimpse of what they page they could visit looks like. I find this helps draw them in as they see cool looking pages linked to every cool looking picture. If they've been to some part of my site before and want to find it again, the visual nature of the link can help jog their memory.
